Abdominal pain often occurs during pregnancy. It can be caused by many things and does not necessarily have to be dangerous. Usually, abdominal pain during pregnancy is due to the baby and uterus growing, muscles and ligaments having to give way, or because the uterus contracts.

Abdominal pain, therefore, belongs during normal and healthy pregnancy and is usually not a sign of anything serious.

Abdominal pain in pregnancy

Abdominal pain in pregnancy can be caused by many different things, including:

Ligament pain

Ligament pain is very common during pregnancy and can be reminiscent of menstrual-like pain or maybe non-specific pain over the groin. Some pregnant women will also experience pain in the middle or upper abdomen, which may be due to stretching of the ligaments that hold the uterus in place. However, it can also be because the muscles in the abdominal wall are being stretched. After all, the uterus is growing. These types of pains are prevalent to experience.

Ligament pain can come on very suddenly and cause some painful tingling in the abdomen. However, they go away just as quickly again - but it can naturally give rise to fright or worry.

Picking cattle

It is pretty normal to pick cattle during pregnancy, as they are a realistic training of the uterus for childbirth. Picking cattle often come when you have been active. However, it is very typical not to notice the vast majority of them, and as a starting point, they should also only be able to be felt and not be painful. If they are, it is a sign that you need to stay calmer and give yourself time to rest.

Ectopic pregnancy

In rare cases, abdominal pain during pregnancy may be due to an ectopic pregnancy. The symptoms of this are severe pain in the side of the abdomen in 6.-8—weeks of pregnancy. If you also bleed at the same time, contact your doctor immediately.

If you bleed profusely in the abdominal cavity, the condition can be dangerous, and you will feel bad here, have low blood pressure, and become unconscious.

Keep calm in case of abdominal pain

If you have ligament plucking pains, it helps to lie down and stay calm. If necessary, also use a heating pad and lie on your side to relax as much as possible. However, if you doubt the cause of your pain and it gives you a lot of worries, or you also experience that you are bleeding, you should see your doctor.
