Nutrition fundamentals: energy, macros, and the food behind the numbers
Macros are useful accounting categories. They become much more useful when they are kept beside fibre, micronutrients, food sources, appetite, culture, and the uncertainty in energy estimates.

For healthy adults, Nordic guidance places protein, carbohydrate, and fat within broad energy-percentage ranges rather than one ideal split. Use those ranges for orientation, then build meals from varied foods instead of treating three totals as a complete diet.

Energy describes how much fuel food can provide. Nutrients describe what that food contributes, while the food itself brings structure, flavour, culture, and a mixture of components that a macro total cannot show. Two meals can contain similar protein, carbohydrate, fat, and energy while differing greatly in fibre, vitamins, minerals, sodium, and degree of processing.
WHO frames a healthy diet around adequacy, balance, moderation, and diversity. These principles are deliberately broader than a calorie target. They allow different cuisines and eating patterns to meet nutritional needs without pretending that one menu or ratio is universally correct.

Protein, carbohydrate, and fat are energy-providing macronutrients
European food-information rules use general conversion factors of 4 kilocalories per gram for protein, 4 for carbohydrate, and 9 for fat. These factors make it possible to translate an energy allocation into approximate gram amounts. They are accounting constants, not evidence that all grams within a category have the same nutritional value.
Fibre is treated separately at 2 kilocalories per gram in the same regulation, while alcohol and polyols have their own factors. A calculator that divides all daily energy among only protein, carbohydrate, and fat is therefore a simplified planning view. It does not reproduce every source of energy on a food label.

Reference ranges are broad because healthy diets vary
The Nordic Nutrition Recommendations place adult intake at 10 to 20 percent of energy from protein, 45 to 60 percent from carbohydrate, and 25 to 40 percent from fat. The ranges overlap in a way that permits many final combinations, but any complete allocation must still total 100 percent.
NNR explicitly says these ranges should not be treated as fixed recommended intakes for every individual. They guide dietary assessment and planning at an adequate energy intake. Selecting every upper bound would total 120 percent, while selecting every lower bound would total 80 percent. A tool must not display those endpoints as three targets that can all be chosen together.

The source of each macro still matters
NNR recommends a predominantly plant-based pattern rich in vegetables, fruits, berries, pulses, potatoes, and whole grains, with ample fish and nuts, moderate low-fat dairy, and limited red and processed meat and highly processed foods rich in added fat, salt, or sugar. This describes foods, not just totals.
The same report recommends saturated fat below 10 percent of energy, added and free sugars below 10 percent, and at least 25 to 35 grams of fibre daily. A macro split can sit inside the broad ranges while missing all three quality markers. Check the composition of the diet after checking the arithmetic.

Daily energy expenditure can be estimated, not read from a profile
Resting energy can be measured under controlled conditions or predicted from age, height, weight, and a source equation. Total expenditure also reflects habitual activity. EFSA uses physical activity levels of 1.4, 1.6, 1.8, and 2.0 to represent low-active through very active sustainable lifestyles when deriving reference values.
The Mifflin equation was developed from 498 healthy adults aged 19 to 78 and explained 71 percent of variation in measured resting expenditure in that sample. That is useful evidence for an estimate and clear evidence against calling the result exact. Selecting an activity category adds another substantial assumption.

A calculator is not a clinical nutrition plan
Pregnancy, breastfeeding, growth, illness, recovery, some medicines, eating disorders, and high-level athletic training can change the question and the appropriate method. NIDDK limits its comparable body-weight planning tool to adults and excludes pregnancy and breastfeeding. The calculator here is narrower still: it estimates adult maintenance expenditure and does not prescribe weight change.
Tracking can also become harmful. NICE warns that digital diet interventions may contribute to disordered eating, excessive exercise, anxiety, or other mental-health harms for some people. If calorie or macro numbers drive fear, rigid restriction, compensatory exercise, or repeated checking, stop using the tool and seek qualified support.
Use the calculator for transparent adult estimates. Use a registered dietitian or clinician for individual treatment, pregnancy, growth, disease, malnutrition, or eating-disorder concerns.

Common questions
What is the best macro split?
There is no single best split for every healthy adult. NNR gives broad ranges of 10 to 20 percent protein, 45 to 60 percent carbohydrate, and 25 to 40 percent fat, with the final allocation totalling 100 percent.
Do macros tell me whether a diet is healthy?
No. Macro totals omit food-source quality, many micronutrients, sodium, and other relevant features. Fibre, fat type, added sugar, dietary variety, and the foods providing the macros also matter.
Is a calculated TDEE my exact maintenance intake?
No. It combines a resting-energy prediction with a chosen activity level. Both contain uncertainty, so the result is an estimate of expenditure rather than an exact prescription.
Can I use the calculator during pregnancy?
No. Pregnancy and breastfeeding have additional and changing requirements that this adult maintenance model does not represent. Use guidance from a qualified maternity clinician or dietitian.
